Transferable and technical skills
A good Architect has to manage people, budgets and client relationships while designing spaces that are attractive, functional and meet building and safety standards.
The transferable and technical skills I have obtained during my studies as an interior designer are as follows:
Design and style
We provide sketches of my proposed designs for various projects using computer programs to create the design. We have also learned to combine colours, furniture and materials to complement the design as well as meeting the client’s goals and aspirations.
Teamwork ability
In order to complete a project successfully, I communicate with clients to assess what they want and need in a space and then present my ideas for meeting those requirements.
I believe that communication and coordination is very important with suppliers of materials, furniture and equipment and contractors.

Organisational skills

Organisational skills are required because as an Interior designer I would be responsible for keeping the project on budget and on schedule. Documentation of the design process and products used is very important as well as contract management and negotiations on my client’s behalf.
Planning and arranging event s and activities
Planning of all activities is an important step so that everyone knows what to do and any problems can be identified well in advance so that preventive measures action can be taken.
Delegate responsibility
Part of my work is to be delegated to the design team whose ideas and suggestions will improve the quality of work.
Motivate others
Part of my organizational skills is to motivate the design team and contractor to perform their job up to a professional standard leaving no deficiencies.
Assess and evaluate work
This includes my own work and other’s work so that the project meets the client’s goals and visions e.g. is it within budget and was it completed on time.
Deal with obstacles and crisis management
As an interior designer I am be able to handle any obstacles encountered by fully cooperating and communicating with the design team and contractor and seek expert advice when required.
Multi-task
As an interior designer I am able to perform not only spatial design but know which materials, furniture and equipment, lighting, plumbing, sewerage, energy from renewable sources such as solar energy and electrical installations should be recommended to the client.
Keeping records of the design process
Keeping records is very important so that materials selected, steps to conform to safety at work, sketches and cost analysis to be within budget are well documented.
Design experience
Our work is a professional lever, which makes all the difference. Whether a home is small or big I am able to incorporate different colours and lighting to create the desired look and feel a client seeks for a particular area.
During my four year studies (3 for the degree and 1 for the Masters) I have learned to make rooms or offices convenient for human use that is functional and aesthetically pleasing. This includes not only the floor plans and choices for furnishings, but also some knowledge of how best to integrate features like lighting and climatic control within the building.
